Preschool & School Admission

School admission and their fees have become a fear factor for many parents these days. So right here in this blog, I am going to elaborate on the age criteria and the sunk cost involved in the school & preschool admission of a child.

What is the right age to take admission in preschool or school?

Hi everyone, I am a mother of one and have done my MBA. As many new parents even I was worried about the admission process for my kiddo. Hence I did a survey regarding it and would like to pen it down which might help some of you to take a right decision for your child’s academic future.

5 points you must know about the age criteria for Schools

  1.  As per Maharashtra Government, a child should be 6 years complete when he gets admitted to Class I.
  2.  A child’s complete age in an academic year is considered from 1st Oct to 30th Sep. i.e. if you want to take admission for Class I for your child in the year 2019 then your child must be 6 years complete before 30th Sep 2018.
  3. Every school releases its admission form in the month of October to December of the previous year for the school starting in April (for CBSE) & June (for SSC).
  4.  A child should be 3 years complete before 30th Sep for taking admission in nursery. Few preschools also take admission in nursery before the child completes 3 years, but then the child have to repeat either nursery or Jr. KG (L. KG) or Sr. KG (U. KG) prior to Class I, as he/she might not be 6 years complete i.e. eligible for Class I as per government rules.
  5. Some schools do permit admission for kids who are of age 5 years 9 months or 5 years 10 month in Class I. But, you need to enquire at schools, for their age criteria which you are willing to take admission into.

How is the Admission Process and is there any Sunk Cost Involved?

  • You need to fill up the admission forms of the school you wish to take admission into. The form fees ranges from INR 500 to INR 2000. Some schools have procedures totally online and some do it offline.
  • Then the child and the parents are called up for an interview or a one to one interaction or a seminar in some cases. In this session they give you a brief idea about their school. Whereas in interview they check the credibility of the parent as well as the student to get admitted there. (You could know about what kind of questions are generally asked in such interviews in another blog of mine).
  • A list of admitted students is then displayed and you need to pay the fees and take admission.
  • While paying the fees, there is a deposit fee also which is not refunded by the schools. So if the child’s name appeared in a non-preferred school in the first list then you have to take admission by paying the deposit fee which is in thousands ranging from INR 40000 to INR 1,00,000. These fees are non-refundable as mentioned earlier. So, if your child’s name appeared in your preferred school later than this, and you wish to take admission there, then you lose on this deposit amount.

             Sunk Cost
1. Charges of admission forms - you would at-least fill 4-5 school forms. So INR 2000 multiply by the no. of schools which approximately costs to INR 10000.
2. Deposit fees – Once you confirm an admission in a school you have to pay these fees. There are very few schools who refund this amount once your kid passes out from their school by taking a leaving certificate.

These days admission in schools have become a very big topic and its fees and selection of school is the biggest concern. All the best to all the parents working hard for their kids school admission. Hope this article helps you in some way or the other.
